Poole (Pool)
An outgrowth of two smaller locations, Finn and French, Poole Location was one of the largest Mesabi Range locations. The Poole mine, named after J.D. Poole, first shipped ore in 1895 and by 1919 had shipped 16,347,691 tons. In 1941, the mine made its last shipment and was listed as “exhausted” in the Minnesota Mining Directory. According to the records at the historical society, J.D. Poole was an early Vermilion Range pioneer who came to the Mesabi Range in the early 1890’s and helped form the Burt-Poole mine. By the 1920’s, the mine was being known as the Burt-Pool in the Minnesota Mining Directories, and eventually just Pool. According to a newspaper reporter, the settlement’s houses were “set at all angles, the few streets with zigzagging lanes” because “the streets were made some time after the houses were built in a neighborly cluster.” Poole Location was the home of the Saint Louis County Fairgrounds, where the Oliver Mining Company held many of its company picnics. In 1925, the fairgrounds were relocated to “South” Hibbing to make way for more mining.
